Mood Scent 4 : Flower Power

April Aromatics, Atelier Des Ors, Melt My Heart, Perfume Houses A - D, strangelove nyc

Welcome to the second edition of Mood Scent 4 for 2020 where the fragrant team of Australian Perfume Junkies, L’EsperessenceI Scent You A Day and Megan In Sainte Maxime are your selectors for perfumes for various occasions. This time around we are focusing on Flower Power fragrances.

Florals are a category that will either effusively delight or repulse in equal measure. Some of you will adore certain florals but have no time for others. Some perfume lovers really don’t have much time to smell the flowers in fragrance at all. I know that there are flowers in perfumery that can be polarising like the fleshy, sometimes meaty tuberose or iris, that seems to send the chills for some. Florals can give the greatest pleasure too. I do believe there’s a floral for everyone so let’s see if we can find one that might be up your alley.

I’ve kept it short this time around I will confess that I’m not a huge fan of the soliflore style though, and much prefer florals where there is a healthy mix of woods and resins. C’est la vie!

meltmyheart : strangelove : Christopher Laudamiel : 2016

This is one of my favourite floral centric fragrances on the market full stop with the most wonderful orris butter. This gives meltmyheart such an amazing lift and texture. Orris as you’re probably aware comes from the iris pallida flower and the incredible roots called rhizomes. The process to harness the deliciousness is a long one, approximately three years before the plant is ready to be harvested and then the roots need to be dried which is another time consuming process. Finally it’s time for extraction when the beautiful orris butter comes along. Orris smells powdery, woody and very distinctive.

The scent of the orris in meltmyheart along with that gorgeous dark chocolate is truly exquisite. It’s a gift wrapped in love with a sexy kiss. This smells expensive and the actual fragrance is rather pricy but that’s just the way it is. There is oud in here too as is the case with all of the strangelove fragrances and is blended seamlessly but is not the star of the show as is in their showstopper deadofnight.

Pink Wood : April Aromatics : Tanja Bochnig : 2017

This is definitely one of my favourites in the April Aromatics line. It feels like an excellent representation of the collection too. It has all of the good parts of the other perfumes in the collection represented here. The beautiful and otherworldly sense of woods that Tanja Bochnig conquers and the seductive florals.

Red berries and incredibly dark roses are layered here like a beautiful magenta whipped cream. Add in oud, sandalwood and the heavenly labdanum and Pink Wood becomes the most delectable fragrance. It feels like taking a bite of something forbidden that you didn’t realise would taste so divine. There’s a wonderful sense of shade in this fragrance, flickers of light and dark as the perfume wears on. Imagine beautiful dark red petals strewn around American Beauty style.

Nuda Veritas : Atelier Des Ors : Marie Salamagne : 2018

This is an abstract floral and one that was not necessarily an instant love for me but has stealthily come into focus. This is the perfect fragrance for those who are not huge big floral lovers. It’s a lighter floral scent with just enough of a nudge to get you excited. There’s a lovely jasmine but also hints of moss and a waterfall in the background. An unescapable sheen of whiteness glides through the fragrance. Nuda Veritas is more of a subtle flower power fragrance but still has legs.

1969 Parfum de Revolte : Histoires de Parfums : Perfumer : Gerald Ghislain : 2001

This is the prettiest scent in the Histoires de Parfums selection and since our topic is Flower Power with its hippy era connotations, then 1969 is an apt selection. This is a peachy floral with rose and a white floral edge and some chocolate too. The patchouli is not of unwashed proportions, it smells relatively smooth and neutered, not in an earthy style. The overall effect is scrumptious and very uplifting.

Please make sure to read my fellow Mood Scent 4 group writers : Samantha on I Scent You A Day, Esperanza on L’Esperessence and Portia at Australian Perfume Junkies for their take on today’s topic.

Thank you so much for reading and let me know your Flower Power fragrances too.

  2. What wonderful and original choice Megan! I always find it such an education working wth three other perfume bloggers. Just when you think you’ve smelled everything, all these wonderful treasures come out of the woodwork! I haven’t tried any of the fragrances you describe but I definitely want to. I love the idea that Nuda Veritas has a waterfall in the background. April Aromatics pink Wood sounds like HEAVEN! Always a joy to work with you!
