In Colour is already one of my favourite albums of the year so far and I’ve only listened to it twice. It’s from Jamie xx (the producer of The XX). I adore the recently released single from the album – Loud Places that I’ve already written about featuring the softly determined vocals of Romy Madley Croft from The XX.
Jamie xx, real name Jamie Smith is also an in demand producer and has crossed over to the R&B side with Drake and Alicia Keys. He also remixed Gil Scott-Heron‘s final album I’m New Here and is currently working on the third The XX epic as well as scoring a ballet for the Manchester International Festival based on Jonathan Safran Foer‘s book Tree of Codes. He is also involved with Soundscapes : Listening to Paintings at the National Gallery in London. This exhibit features sound installations inspired by works in the museum’s collection. Jamie xx selected Coastal Scene by Belgian artist Théo van Rysselberghe which is seen here at the top of the page. It’s thought the painting was created in about 1892. The exhibition runs from July 8 – September 6.
In Colour comes to life with more shade, colour and beats than the typical The XX album. I love the distinctive sound of The XX so it’s brilliant to hear this album and still get The XX fix albeit in a different way. In Colour still has the strangeness that I adore from that group but is more interesting with a quiet club vibe. It is introspective but brutally addictive. Expect to shuffle with your eyes closed when you hear this.
In Colour is currently available for free streaming on iTunes accompanied by visuals. The album will be released on Young Turks on June 2.
